A few steps through German-French Rhine history:
The crossing of the Rhine on April 2, 1945, by the French 1st Army German-French history has always been connected to the Rhine, whether as a border or as a shared waterway, as a protective wall or as an obstacle to be overcome. In the spring of 1945, the Rhine at Leimersheim gained particular significance: Until March 23, the German Wehrmacht managed, using all available means of transport, to secure the safe Baden shore against the advancing Allied forces.
On April 2, the 21st Colonial Infantry Regiment of the 9th Colonial Infantry Division of the 1st French Army crossed the Rhine here with the aim of capturing Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and southern Germany up to Lake Constance. In memory of this event, an obelisk was erected in 1946 – the goal of this tour along the Rhine. On the walk from the ferry landing to the memorial, you will learn about the memorable events of spring 1945 and their background – including accounts from someone who was involved at the time.
